Frequently Asked Questions
Q. The
hole I am interested in is not included in the log database. Is it missing?
A. If the hole you
are interested in is not listed, then no logging data were collected at that
hole. Core data from that hole may be available through IODP-TAMU at http://iodp.tamu.edu/tasapps/ and at http://iodp.tamu.edu/database/ .
Q. I cannot access the hole that I am interested in. It
looks like I need a password.
A. All holes are
subject to a 1-year moratorium after the post-cruise meeting. During this time
only members of the shipboard party are allowed access to the data. After one
year, the data becomes available to the general public.
Q. How can I get access to password-protected data?
A. To access
password-protected data you need to obtain written permission from the
co-chiefs and staff scientist of the expedition during which the log data was
acquired. You can find the list of the expedition scientific participants at http://iodp.tamu.edu/scienceops/expeditions.html
. If your request is approved, submit written proof via email to the IODP-USIO Log Data
Services Manager. Then, you will be granted a
username and password that will give you access to the IODP log and core
databases.
Q. In the case of password-protected data, do I need a
different username and password to access the IODP core database?
A. No, you can use
the same username and password.
Q. Where can I get information about the processing
performed at each hole?
A. The Documents
section of each Index Page contains detailed information about the processing
performed for each dataset at a particular hole.

Q. I am not familiar with log and logging tool acronyms.
Where can I find their definition?
A. The list of all
the acronyms used in DSDP/ODP/IODP is available in the Documents section of the
Index Page (see previous question). The list of the definitions of all the data
files of each hole is available as a File Dictionary link at the top of the
Index Page of a particular dataset.

Q. I am searching for the data types of a specific hole
and I have come up with page-long lists of individual files. How do I get a
list of the data types available at a specific hole?
A. To get a list of
data types instead of individual files, you must click on the active link for
the hole in the ÔResults:HoleÕ or ÔResults:FilesÕ page. This will take you to
the Index Page of the hole.

Q. I noticed that not all data types are listed in the
Results:Files page.
A. A complete list
of the data types of a specific hole is available on the Index Page of the
hole. To access the Index Page, click on the hole number in the Results:Files
page (see previous questions)
Q. Is any industry-standard format available in this
database?
A. The DLIS (Digital
Log Interchange Standard) is available for both original (raw) and processed
data. Data in this format are available only through the Index Page of a
specific hole.
Q. Where can I get information about the logging tools
currently used in the logging program?
A. You can find a
description of the tools and their applications under Tool &
laboratories ->Logging tools->Tool description on the main search page of
this database or by clicking on http://iodp.ldeo.columbia.edu/TOOLS_LABS/tools.html

Q. Where can I get information about the logging tools
that are no longer used in the logging program?
A. You can find a
description of 'legacy' tools and their applications under the Tool &
laboratories ->Logging tools->Tool description on the main search page of
this database or by clicking on http://iodp.ldeo.columbia.edu/TOOLS_LABS/tools.html
